That new year’s post that talks about goals and such

Hello, 2014!

While I didn’t manage to stay awake to actually ring in the new year – two weeks of travel in three different directions with a two-year-old will do that to you – I am ready to welcome a new year. (Even if it does come with a bad head cold for the small one and a possible foot of snow tomorrow. *Sigh*)

Last year, I started choosing a word that would frame my year ahead; something to keep me focused, support my goals and reflect my mood. That word was peace. A lot had changed in a short amount of time, and I wanted a year to stabilize while also learning to accept change and gain more flexibility.

This year, my word is shine. Things are calmer, and I see a lot of potential in the year ahead. I want to embrace the positive and capitalize on new opportunities.

Some immediate goals and projects to follow along:

Finally implementing my tickler system of home maintenance. It’s an annual chore calendar that breaks down all the mundane tasks of housekeeping to make them more manageable and less frustrating. I’ve spent a lot of time creating it, organizing it, and admiring my color-coded index cards…but not actually following it. That changes now.

Fixing the craziness that is our luggage/handbag closet — and saying buh-bye to its 1950s Pepto-pink carpet.

Converting our pantry into a walk-in one by extending it into an unused closet space. Yes, that means we’ll be wielding crowbars. Get excited.

Less random Internet browsing, more actual book reading. You can follow me on Goodreads to see what’s on my list (and whether I’d share it or pitch it).

And, this guy turns five years old in a few weeks! Which calls for a party, natch.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and productive new year!
