12 days (and counting) of Christmas books

“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” ~Jackie Kennedy Onassis

Christmas books for children | The Sensible Home

Last year, I stocked up on Christmas books — I had planned on 12, but somehow came home with more like 25 — to read to Owen at bedtime each night leading up to the big day. I’ve seen on Pinterest where others have individually wrapped each book, making each night’s story a surprise, which I like; but will have to wait until we’re past the preschool years of “I’m going to read the same book six nights in a row, please and thank you.”

I store them in their own plastic storage bin so I can easily pull it out with the rest of our holiday decorations, set it in his room for flipping through, then close it back up Jan. 1. I got most of them second-hand at a discount bookstore, and a lot of them feature characters Owen was already familiar with. You could easily keep an eye out at yard sales, thrift stores, etc., during the year, and don’t forget to put some on birthday/Christmas lists, too.

Need inspiration? Here’s what we ended up with:

  1. The Elf on the Shelf by Carol V. Aebersold (yes, we have an Elf; see how we shake it up HERE)
  2. How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
  3. The Christmas Penguin by Mary Packard

P.S. The Jackie Kennedy quote above is one of my favorites — see what I did with it in Owen’s original nursery HERE.
